how to play klondike

Klondike is the classic patience card game, free and with unlimited undo. Build four foundation piles from ace to king, one per suit, by moving cards around seven columns. Every deal, daily or solo, is checked by our solver first, so it can always be won.

  1. Tap a card to send it where it fits best: to its foundation if it can go, otherwise onto another column. Or drag it.
  2. In the columns, stack cards downward in alternating colors: a red 9 on a black 10.
  3. Only a king (and the cards on it) can move into an empty column.
  4. Tap the pile in the top left to turn up a card. When it runs out, tap again to turn the pile over.
  5. Drag works too: lift a card or a run, and it snaps to the pile that lights up when you let go.

Keyboard: Arrow keys move a ring over the piles and up and down a column, Enter or Space plays the card under it (or draws on the pile), D draws, H hints, U undoes, and Esc goes back to the menu.

tips

  • Uncover face-down cards first. They're the real obstacle.
  • Don't rush aces and twos up if you might still need a low card to hold a run.
  • Empty a column only when you have a king ready to move in.
  • Undo is free and unlimited. Use it to test a line and back out.

faq

Is every deal winnable?

Yes. Our solver plays every deal through before you ever see it, the daily and the solo deals alike. If you get stuck, the way out is somewhere back in your undo history.

Do cards go to the foundations on their own?

Only the safe ones: aces, twos, and cards that nothing on the table could still need. Once every card is face up and the pile is empty, the rest plays itself out.

Is there a hint?

Yes. Hint lights up a good move, or the draw pile when drawing is the move. If nothing helps, it tells you the deal is stuck so you can undo.

Draw one or draw three?

Draw one, with as many passes through the pile as you like.

How is it scored?

By the time from your first move to the last card. Moves are counted too.
