how to play chess
Chess is the full game, free to play, against a bot with five levels from snack to shark. Castling, en passant, promotion, check, mate, stalemate, threefold repetition and the fifty-move rule are all in. The daily is a mate in two.
- Pick a level. Snack looks one move ahead and gets silly. Shark looks further and plays the best move it can see.
- Drag a piece to a square, or tap it and then tap where it goes. Dots mark the legal squares. Pawns that reach the far rank ask what they want to become.
- Before the first move, pick white or black. Flip turns the board around at any time.
- Each bot you beat puts a crown on its chip, so you can see how far up the food chain you are.
- The daily is one mate in two. Find the move. Any other try ends the day.
Keyboard: Tab to the board, then the arrow keys move between squares. Enter or Space picks up a piece and puts it down. F flips the board, U undoes in a bot game, and 1 to 4 picks a promotion. Esc goes back to the menu.
tips
- Snack will hang a piece. Take it.
- If you are in check, the king square glows red. Get out before you do anything else.
- Undo takes back your move and the bot's answer. The daily does not undo.
- Watch the +number next to each player: it is the material lead in pawns.
faq
Which rules are in?
Castling, en passant, promotion to any piece, check, checkmate, stalemate, threefold repetition, the fifty-move rule, and draws when nobody has enough material to mate.
Can I play black?
Yes. Pick black before the first move and the bot opens. Flip only turns the board around.
How strong is shark?
It searches four moves deep and plays out every capture at the end of its search, so it does not hang pieces. In our tests it beats every other level, every game. Chomp and bite play out captures too, with a little room for error. Snack and nibble do not, which is why they leave pieces lying around.
Where do the daily puzzles come from?
The daily mate in two comes from the Lichess puzzle database, which is public domain (CC0). Puzzles are rated 1200 to 2000. This game is not affiliated with Lichess.
How is a win scored?
Beating a harder bot scores higher: snack, nibble, bite, chomp, then shark. A loss or a draw scores none. Solving the daily counts as solved.
