how to play sweeper

Sweeper is a free mine-clearing logic game. Every number tells you how many mines touch that square, counting diagonals. Open every safe square to win. Every board is checked by our solver before you see it, so it can always be cleared by logic alone, without a single guess.

  1. The field opens itself at a safe spot. Start reading the numbers around the edge of the opening.
  2. Tap a square to dig it. Hold it, or right-click with a mouse, to plant a flag where you know a mine is.
  3. Tap a number whose flags are all placed to open the rest of its neighbors in one go.
  4. Flag mode swaps the two: a tap flags and a hold digs. A press that slides off its square does nothing, so a swipe never digs by accident.
  5. Open every safe square to finish. Hitting a mine adds 30 seconds and flags it for you; the clock stops while the tab is hidden.

Keyboard: Arrow keys move between squares, Enter or Space digs (or opens around a finished number), F plants or removes a flag, and Esc goes back to the menu.

tips

  • A 1 touching exactly one closed square means that square is a mine.
  • Compare neighbors: if a 1 and a 2 share all but one closed square, that extra square must be the second mine.
  • Near the end, count the mines left. Sometimes the total settles the last few squares.

faq

Will I ever have to guess?

No. Our generator only keeps boards that a step-by-step logic solver can clear from the opening, using only what is on screen, so the numbers always contain the answer. We test that on every daily for a year and hundreds of practice boards on each size.

What sizes are there?

Easy is 9 by 9 with 10 mines, normal is 14 by 10 with 22, and hard is 18 by 12 with 42. On a tall screen the field is turned on its side. The daily is normal and the same for everyone.

How is it scored?

By time, plus 30 seconds for every mine you open. A mine never ends the game, so one slip doesn't cost you the daily. Under two minutes on normal is very good.

How do I flag on a phone?

Hold the square for a moment, or turn on flag mode so a tap flags and a hold digs.
