how to play hat trick

Hat trick is football tic tac toe for two people and one phone. The grid has a club, a country, a star's teammates or the Ballon d'Or on every side. On your turn, name a player who fits both headers of a square.

  1. Tap an open square, then type a player and pick them from the suggestions.
  2. A right name claims that square for you. A wrong name hands the turn over. Nobody can be used twice.
  3. With steals on, each side gets three. Tap a square the other side holds and name a different player who fits it to take it. A steal costs one whether it lands or not.
  4. Three in a row wins. If the board fills first, whoever holds more squares wins.
  5. The 30 second clock is off until you turn it on. When it runs out, the turn passes.

Keyboard: Arrow keys move between squares when the box is empty, and between suggestions once you have typed. Enter guesses, Backspace deletes, and Esc goes back to the menu.

tips

  • Take the middle when it looks easy. It shows up in four lines.
  • Save a steal for the square that would finish their line.
  • A wrong name still burns that player, so don't fish.
  • Easy grids stick to the biggest clubs. Hard grids reach further down the leagues.

faq

Is there a daily board?

No. Each game deals a fresh grid at the difficulty you picked, and rematch deals another.

Who counts for a square?

Anyone in the pool who played for that club at some point, is from that country, shared a season at a club with that star, or won the Ballon d'Or. A player can only be used once a game.

How do you win?

Three of your squares in a row, stolen ones included. Otherwise the full board goes to whoever has more squares. There is no score to save.

Where do the players come from?

Player facts come from Wikidata (CC0). Country flags are from flag-icons (MIT). Hat trick is not affiliated with any league, club or player.
